2014: Spielberg lobt Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunns Guardians of the Galaxy, der zehnte Superhelden-Film aus dem Marvel Cinematic Universe, bietet ein beeindruckendes Schauspieler-Ensemble auf, darunter Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close und Benicio del Toro.

Regisseur James Gunn schreibt das Drehbuch gemeinsam mit Nicole Perlman. Darin verbündet sich Protagonist Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) mit einer bunt zusammengewürfelten Truppe Außerirdischer, die auf der Flucht sind, nachdem sie den so genannten „Orb“ gestohlen haben- ein mächtiges Artefakt.

Gunn versucht so viel wie möglich mit realen Sets und Effekten zu arbeiten und diese mit den CGI– und Motion Capture-Aufnahmen zu kombinieren. In Gunns Worten:

“Our sets are enormous. We have a prison that is 350,000 pounds of steel. Anybody who knows me knows I love the mix of practical and CGI effects… I can’t wait for people to see it, because it’s astonishingly beautiful.”

Der Film kommt bei der Kritik und beim Publikum gut an und nimmt weltweit 773,3 Millionen Dollar ein, bei einem Produktionsbudget von 170 Millionen Dollar (an der Kinokasse erreicht er damit Platz 5 im Marvel Cinematic Universe). Gelobt wird vor allem sein Humor, die Action, die Regie und der Soundtrack.

Mit den Darstellern Djimon Hounsou (Amistad), Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan) und Zoe Saldana (The Terminal) hat Steven Spielberg bereits zusammengearbeitet. Chris Pratt wird die Hauptrolle in dem von Spielberg produzierten Blockbuster Jurassic World spielen.

In einem Cannes-Interview bezeichnet Spielberg Guardians of the Galaxy als seinen Lieblings-Superhelden-Film:

“I love the Superman of Richard Donner, The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan, and the first Iron Man, but [the] superhero film that impressed me most is one that does not take itself too seriously: Guardians of the Galaxy. When his projection was over, I left with the feeling of having seen something new in movies, without any cynicism or fear of being dark when needed. There is a difference between heroes and superheroes. The hero is an ordinary person who is faced with a serious fact and acts to modify it. A hero is a person who, walking down the street, see[s] a car on fire and runs [to] help the person who is in the driver’s seat, attached to the seat belt to loosen. [A] superhero is a person who, on the same scene, would fly to the car and try to turn it upside down and shake it using his super strength, until the driver is released. I identify more with the first example. Film[s of] everyday heroes.”
